A persons innate abilities, awareness and availability of positive resources will determine effectively they will be able to cope with extreme stress. Along with their individual nature, each person has their own strengths and personal challenges. Two people experiencing the same situation can have totally different reactions. Because one way of coping and recovering from stress may not work for everyone, it is important to keep in mind that each individual must be assessed as a unique situation. There are some certain approaches, considerations and general concerns that are good to know.

There are some ways that people respond or react to extreme trauma that we already know. What we find interesting is how people can react different types of patterns. A delayed reaction or an immediate reaction are a two examples. Such occurrences may be short lived or last for a long time. A person can be influenced by circumstances which will can make a difference in how they choose to deal with the situation. Sometimes stress reactions may not happen until after some time has passed, so the person may not connect them to their origins. There could be inaccuracies and also confusion as to the reason for the reactions and what needs to be done about them. When one finds themselves in that situation, it is important to get a wide overview of the circumstances. Communicating with those that have shared experiences is one way of handling particular types of trauma and the stress that comes from it. Some people will find it valuable to be in a support group. A group environment is not comfortable for everyone. One additional benefit to support groups is they can be very helpful to those with limited resources and other types of support that are personal. The immediate environment may not have the support of others such as family members or close friends.


Children will need to have professional intervention if they have been exposed to extreme stress or trauma situations. Children are not capable of understanding what is happening within and may only display symptoms. In such conditions, the child may exhibit aggressiveness, extreme withdrawal, physical symptoms of stress reactions and other symptoms. The child may need their parents involvement in helping to overcome the stress, depending on the individual situation.

There is a huge difference between adults, young children and teens when it comes to effectively dealing with extreme stress. All age categories and especially young children would benefit from professional treatment. Depending on the nature of the trauma, there may need to be ongoing long term support for adults and teens as well. Regardless of what kind of case, good friends and family can play a major and positive in recovery by offering a personal support system.
